Tarun Tejpal Convicted by Bombay High Court in 2013 Sexual Assault Case

In a significant development in one of India's most closely watched criminal cases, the Bombay High Court on Thursday convicted former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal in the 2013 sexual assault case, overturning the acquittal granted by a Goa trial court in 2021. The High Court's verdict comes more than 13 years after the alleged incident and marks a major turning point in the long-running legal proceedings. 

The case relates to allegations made by a former woman colleague, who accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel elevator during Tehelka's ThinkFest event in Goa in November 2013. Tejpal had consistently denied the allegations throughout the proceedings. 

High Court Reverses 2021 Acquittal

The Bombay High Court set aside the 2021 judgment of a Goa sessions court, which had acquitted Tejpal of all charges. The acquittal had been challenged by the Goa government, arguing that the trial court had erred in its appreciation of evidence and the survivor's testimony. 

After hearing the appeal, the High Court concluded that the earlier acquittal could not be sustained and convicted Tejpal, bringing a fresh legal conclusion to the high-profile case. 

Case Dates Back to 2013

The allegations stem from incidents that allegedly occurred on November 7 and 8, 2013, when the complainant accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside a hotel lift in Goa during an official event organised by Tehelka magazine. The case drew nationwide attention and sparked widespread discussions on workplace safety, accountability, and sexual misconduct in the media industry. 

Tarun Tejpal to Challenge Verdict

Following the conviction, Tarun Tejpal stated that he intends to challenge the Bombay High Court's judgment before the Supreme Court of India. His legal team has maintained that the conviction will be appealed through the available legal process.
