Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Apologises to Indian Government Over Content and Operational Lapses

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised to the Government of India following concerns raised over the presence of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), deepfake content, and certain operational lapses on Meta’s platforms, according to reports.

The apology reportedly came after senior Meta executives met Indian government officials in New Delhi earlier this week. The meeting followed increased scrutiny from Indian authorities over alleged CSAM advertisements, the spread of AI-generated misinformation, and the temporary restriction of a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology had earlier sought a personal apology from Zuckerberg, warning that failure to adequately respond could have implications for Meta’s intermediary liability protections under Indian law.

In its response, Meta reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards child sexual abuse material and stated that it is strengthening its content detection and moderation systems while continuing to cooperate with Indian authorities.

The development highlights the growing focus of governments worldwide on platform accountability, user safety, and responsible AI-driven content moderation. India remains one of Meta’s largest markets, making regulatory compliance and cooperation with authorities increasingly important for the company’s operations in the country.
